Bebop Spoken There

Splinter @ The Bridge - Mark Williams Trio

Mark Williams (gtr), Andy Champion (bs), David Carnegie (dms).
This, the first gig of Splinter's Autumn/Winter season, drew a respectable sized crowd who responded enthusiastically to the music played. Mark was in top form and the normally taciturn guitarist even spoke yet still failed to plug the album from which most of the material was drawn. Maybe a commercial faux pas but quite a refreshing change!
He is a most remarkable player seemingly in total control of the fingerboard and capable of doing the business in whatever mode he chooses. Sensitive balladry, jazz grooves and rocklike thrashes all fall beneath his fingers with apparent ease.
Likewise David he soloed impressively and drove the trio on to the justified ovation.
Regular bassist Paul Susans couldn't make the gig but, with Champion the Wonder Bass to call on, the trio performed as if they'd been playing together for years - which of course they have in other formats.
The success of the Splinter @ The Bridge series has encouraged a further Splinter series at Darlington Arts Centre. It kicks off with a four band bash next Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, closer to home, tonight's doorkeeper Zoe Gilby launches her second CD at The Cluny on Tuesday night. Sounds like it will be another good session.
Lance.
