Bebop Spoken There

Béla Fleck: “ And that's the great thing about live performances, you take people on a journey. It doesn't have to be like something else they've heard. It's not supposed to be". DownBeat, April, 2024.

Mini Photo Exhibition @ The Lit & Phil

As a sort of an overture to the Book Launch at the Lit and Phil of the late Chris Yates' Blue Horizons and the accompanying talk by Alan Twelftree on Friday July 23 a selection of vintage jazz related photos from the Bebop Spoken Here Photo Gallery are now on display in the main library (Lit & Phil Library, 23 Westgate Road, Newcastle NE1 1SE).
This, the Book Launch, promises to be the first of two exciting events that weekend.
Blue Horizons is essential reading for anyone with an interest in British Jazz both national and regional - particularly the latter category.
As most of us know, for many years Chris was the epicentre of Jazz Promotion in Newcastle through his work as secretary of Jazz North East and his commitment to a number of other jazz influenced projects. Blue Horizons is an entertaining résumé and a must have read for those of us who at one time practically lived in the Corner House.
Alan Twelftree stood shoulder to shoulder with Chris in those 1980's days and his recollections of the era coupled with his involvement in several Newcastle Jazz Festivals should make for an entertaining and informative hour interspersed with musical examples whilst enjoying a coffee and a chat afterwards.
The event is free and commences at 1:00 pm.
Two days later, on Sunday afternoon (July 25) the second event takes place. This is the Remembering Chris memorial concert at the Corner House, Heaton, (where else?) featuring Alan Barnes, Steve Waterman, Tim Garland and a host of top local jazz musicians. The concert runs from 1:00pm until 6:00pm.
Sad though the background to the event is, I think Chris Yates would/will be ecstatic to see and hear so much good jazz played by so many great musicians to so many fans on his behalf.
Tickets are £10 and all proceeds go to the charities of Chris's choice. They can be obtained from J.G.Windows Ltd. Central Arcade, Newcastle, Corner House or - if you come early - on the door.
Lance.
