Mike Durham Rides Again (hopefully)

Entrepreneur trumpet player Mike Durham has outlined his plans for a JAZZ PARTY in 2011 to replace the loss of the much loved Whitley Bay International Jazz Festival.
Not quite sure what the difference is - same venue and many of the same musicians - however, his vision of the future is outlined on that splendid jazz site Jazz Lives where, no doubt, all will be revealed...
Lance.

JAZZ LIVES said...

Thanks for the kind words, Lance! I think there are two differences in the proposed November 2011 jazz party (aside from its date). One is that the 11/11 party is self-funded where WB rested on an often precarious cushion of grant / government support . . . so Mike is more free to do exactly what he wants. Not that WB seemed to be under duress in any way, mind you. The second is that the proposed party is slightly narrower and more intense. WB had four venues, usually going on at once -- thus perhaps 154 musicians, if I remember correctly. The 11/11 party promises midday to midnight jazz for three days in one venue, with sixty-minute concerts by a number of bands. More after the fashion of US jazz parties. Still, I was eager to give Mike my subscription money before I left, and hope other fanciers are equally moved to do so. I'd rather have a party to look forward to than my money back. And since I have about ten hours of WB video to post (albeit slowly) on JAZZ LIVES, people can see what they might be enjoying in 2011. Thanks for the use of the hall! Cheers, Michael Steinman
