Bebop Spoken There

Alicia Hall Moran: “I would go to hear Jason's band play and I'd say "Y'all hot!" But they came out wearing these casual, saggy outfits, putting music out with these not-attractive outfits like they were going on interviews for jobs they didn't want.” – (DownBeat May 2018).

Shabaka Hutchings: “You have to get the funding to come here [New York], and then there's getting the proper visa to play, which costs more than we get paid.” – (DownBeat May 2018).

CD Review: Phil DeGreg Trio - Queen City Blues

Phil DeGreg (piano); Aaron Jacobs (bass); John Taylor (drums).
(Review by Lance).
OMG! Here's another one that got swept under the carpet - what a magic carpet this piece of Kidderminster is turning out to be!
Is there a better listening recipe than a swinging trio of guys who know the score playing a mix of standards and originals?
I think not. Hines, Wilson, Tatum, Garner, Peterson, Evans, Jarrett laid down the rules and musicians across the world have listened and built upon it. Even here in Newcastle, guys like Paul Edis, Dean Stockdale, James Harrison, Alan Law, the now exported Pete Gilligan and several others have made their mark so it is no surprise to find this Cincinnati trio keeping the flame burning.

Relaxing with a glass of Chardonnay and listening to I've Got a Crush on You makes me want to jump onto the next flight to Ohio and to hear this live (not to mention the memories this tune has for me from so long ago...).
NYC may be the jazz capital of the world but, on the strength of this album, I think Cincinnati is in there pitching.
Many years ago, the late Pete Tabasco, who ran the Art Pepper Appreciation Society, sent me a couple of tapes of the Blue Wisp Big Band. A knockout band and it comes as no surprise to find that the DeGreg Trio was, for 13 years, the house band at the very same Blue Wisp Club.

Submissions for review

Whilst we appreciate the many emails, texts, messages and other communications we receive requesting album/gig reviews on BSH, regrettably, we are unable to reply to them all other than those we are able to answer with a positive response.
Similarly, CDs received by post will only be considered if accompanied by sufficient background material.
Finally, bear in mind that this is a jazz-based site when submitting your album.

Bebop Spoken Here -- Here, being the north-east of England -- centred in the blues heartland of Newcastle and reaching down to the Tees Delta and looking upwards to the Land of the Kilt.
Not a very original title, I know; not even an accurate one as my taste, whilst centred around the music of Bird and Diz, extends in many directions and I listen to everything from King Oliver to Chick Corea and beyond. Not forgetting the Great American Songbook the contents of which has provided the inspiration for much great jazz and quality popular singing for round about a century.
The idea of this blog is for you to share your thoughts and pass on your comments on discs, gigs, jazz - music in general. If you've been to a gig/concert or heard a CD that knocked you sideways please share your views with us. Tell us about your favourites, your memories, your dislikes.
