CD Review: Kathrine Windfeld Big Band

(Review by Lance).
A compelling album by an outstanding Danish Big Band. Not a swing band by any means and, although there are foot-tapping moments, mainly it's a contemporary ensemble with barely a do-wa-do-wa-do-wa in sight. Instead, Ms. Windfeld successfully, and originally, explores territories previously prospected by Gil Evans, Mingus, George Russell, Kenny Wheeler, Mike Westbrook and Mike Gibbs among others. She does it well and loses nothing in comparision to her better known, outside of Denmark, contemporaries.

At only 30-year-old, the world is surely Kathrine's oyster if she can continue in this vein. This pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader must soon be performing at Ronnie's, Birdland and jazz festivals across the world.
Of course, behind every great bandleader there is a great band and this is a great band. Tight ensembles, giving way to free explosions and some exciting solos - Including the lady on piano! Trumpet player Sørensen's solos could even have given the album a subtitle - A Kind of [Danish] Blue.

Bebop Spoken Here -- Here, being the north-east of England -- centred in the blues heartland of Newcastle and reaching down to the Tees Delta and looking upwards to the Land of the Kilt.
Not a very original title, I know; not even an accurate one as my taste, whilst centred around the music of Bird and Diz, extends in many directions and I listen to everything from King Oliver to Chick Corea and beyond. Not forgetting the Great American Songbook the contents of which has provided the inspiration for much great jazz and quality popular singing for round about a century.
The idea of this blog is for you to share your thoughts and pass on your comments on discs, gigs, jazz - music in general. If you've been to a gig/concert or heard a CD that knocked you sideways please share your views with us. Tell us about your favourites, your memories, your dislikes.
