Bebop Spoken There

More from Jazz Monthly:

Jack Cooke: "...neither Giuffre nor Jim Hall are even adequate jazz musicians, they are technically limited, and more importantly, seem unable to improvise logically" - (Review of a JATP concert. Jazz Monthly May 1960)

Bill Evans: "A composer writes something, and an orchestra interprets it--he spends maybe six months writing 10 minutes of music, but a jazz musician spends 10 minutes of playing 10 minutes of music, and he performs it himself". - (Jazz Monthly July1960).

CD Review: Mette Juul - There is a Song

Mette Juul (vcl/gtr); Nikolaj Hess (pno); Ambrose Akinmusire (tpt); Rodney Green (dms); Joe Sanders (bs); Mike Moreno (el gtr).
(Review by Lance).
A New York based, Danish, singer/songwriter, Juul is one of those artists who creep up on you and grow upon you and, as you absorb the melodies and the intriguing lyrics, suddenly you're in love with a voice.
Baltimore
Billie's on the air tonight
A song in the mood of love
She is sending melodies of life
From the town she used to live.
Song For Dannie
You've changed the air I breathe.
Evening Song
Tonight could be
One of those night's we never will forget
And tomorrow might be in a one thousand years.
Berlin
There are echoes of songs in the air
Flying on the wings of Lilli Marleen (sic).
Just some of the lyrical gemstones delivered by Juul in a voice that projects gentle, laid back emotion.
Nothing twee or cute but words dealt straight from the heart as Shirley Horn used to do and with a voice that makes you want to book the next flight to Copenhagen which I don't advise as the lady is now a New Yorker!
Fellow Dane, Hess, is on piano and history may be re-written and say a dog was named after him.
Akinmusire provides the excitement that adds to the emotive content. A disc to relax to but not to sleep to - the words are so compelling.
From Universal Music Denmark.

Bebop Spoken Here -- Here, being the north-east of England -- centred in the blues heartland of Newcastle and reaching down to the Tees Delta and looking upwards to the Land of the Kilt.
Not a very original title, I know; not even an accurate one as my taste, whilst centred around the music of Bird and Diz, extends in many directions and I listen to everything from King Oliver to Chick Corea and beyond. Not forgetting the Great American Songbook the contents of which has provided the inspiration for much great jazz and quality popular singing for round about a century.
The idea of this blog is for you to share your thoughts and pass on your comments on discs, gigs, jazz - music in general. If you've been to a gig/concert or heard a CD that knocked you sideways please share your views with us. Tell us about your favourites, your memories, your dislikes.
