Bebop Spoken There

George Porter Jr.: ''To me, syncopation is like jazz. It wasn't meant for the masses. It was meant just for a hip few". (DownBeat, May 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

CD Review: Worldservice Project – Fire in a Pet Shop

Dave Morecroft – Keyboards; Tim Ower – Saxophones; Raphael Clarkson – Trombone; Conor  Chaplin  - Bass; Neil Blandford – Drums
 (Review by Steve H.)
This is WSP’s second album and what a joy ! Blistering kickass new wave jazz with a sense of humour to boot.
We launch straight in to De-Frienders a frenzied start full of crash bang wallop what a picture. Next up the title track Fire in a Pet Shop which continues the excitement with plenty of baying and roaring as presumably the animals make their escape. Barmy Army   has the feel of a fairground  Klezmer style terrace chant whilst Villain of the Aeroplane evokes the feel of the ‘Bloody Red Baron’ soaring through the skies.
Change the F**king Record - no way man! More raucous hooting and tooting before a quiet sensitive interlude leads us into yet another triumphant conclusion.. Dance of a Clown conjures up the excitement of the circus plates spinning as the audience whoops its approval. Small Town Girl is a funky number which draws us into the final Cunha which begins spookily and, dare I say it?, almost subdued before building up to a  regal fanfare, chilling down again, only to finish with a crushing finale..
As you can tell I really enjoyed this album it literally had me jumping round the room crashing into everything and everyone around me not so much a pet in a blazing shop but more a bull in a china shop. It’s not for those who like quiet tuneful mellow jazz but for anyone fancying a tear up this is for you.
Steve H.
