CD Review: Dave Lalama Big Band - The Hofstra Project

Dave Pietro (alt/sop/fl); Jonathon Holford (alt); Ralph Lalama, John Marshall (ten); Jeff Lange (bar). Leon Petruzzi, Mike Rubenstein, Mike Carubia, Glenn Drewes or Nathan Warner (tpt/flug); John Mosca, Brent Chiorella, Joey Devassy, (tmb) Justin Camito (bs tmb.); Dave Lalama (pno); Pete Coco (bs); Tony Tedesco (dms).
(Review by Lance.)
Track Listing: Full House; Where Are You; No Evidence; Duke Ellington's Sound Of Love; Inner Urge; Pent-Up House; Moody's Mood For Love; St. Thelonious; Tricotism; The Song Isn't You; The Peacocks; Blues For...; Evansville.
Wow! A shouting big band that really roars - dig the opening track, Full House. Lange's baritone, Holford's alto and the tenors of Marshall and Ralph Lalama stretch out solowise on top of some of the swingingest sounds since Woody Herman. By contrast, Where Are You? is laid back, poignant and emotional with Carubia's trumpet telling a heartfelt tale of lost love. A theme expanded by Mosca on trombone, Pietro's soprano and the leaders piano.
Listen to the saxes on Moody's Mood For Love or Drewes trumpet solo on the same or, better still, go here for an audio preview and a run down on each track by the leader Dave Lalama.
The Hofstra Project refers to Hofstra University based on Long Island, New York the seat of learning that Dave Lalama has been associated with for many years. The band comprises Hofstra alumni, faculty and guest artists, all having "no degree of separation" from the university.
Another contender!
Lance
