Bebop Spoken There

RIP Abram Wilson!

Tony Kofi has just posted the following on Facebook - "I just heard some really sad news that trumpet player and UK resident Abraham Wilson just passed. We didn't know each other very well on the music scene but it's always a shock to lose someone so talented and so young. R.I.P. dear brother and may you continue to inspire wherever you go."
Unbelievable! I first heard Abram at the Spice of Life playing alongside Denys Baptiste, Alexander Stewart and the Alex Webb Trio. I had a few words with him afterwards and he seemed a very friendly person. Sadly missed - already the Facebook tributes are pouring in.

  1. Yes very sad indeed Lance. I also saw Abram for the first time at the Spice of Life last August performing his music about Philippa Schuyler. I've followed him since, this is a terrible bolt from the blue.

  2. I am totally stunned by this news. I had the pleasure of working with Abram on four occassions over the past ten years the final time being three weeks ago at Bishop Auckland Town Hall with the Durham County Youth Big Band. Abram had so much energy and time for not just the young people but also the tutors. His playing sparkled on that evening and he educated the performers and audience on the traditions of jazz with such passion. A truly inspirational performer and educator.

Bebop Spoken Here -- Here, being the north-east of England -- centred in the blues heartland of Newcastle and reaching down to the Tees Delta and looking upwards to the Land of the Kilt.
Not a very original title, I know; not even an accurate one as my taste, whilst centred around the music of Bird and Diz, extends in many directions and I listen to everything from King Oliver to Chick Corea and beyond. Not forgetting the Great American Songbook the contents of which has provided the inspiration for much great jazz and quality popular singing for round about a century.
The idea of this blog is for you to share your thoughts and pass on your comments on discs, gigs, jazz - music in general. If you've been to a gig/concert or heard a CD that knocked you sideways please share your views with us. Tell us about your favourites, your memories, your dislikes.
