Bebop Spoken There

Alicia Hall Moran: “I would go to hear Jason's band play and I'd say "Y'all hot!" But they came out wearing these casual, saggy outfits, putting music out with these not-attractive outfits like they were going on interviews for jobs they didn't want.” – (DownBeat May 2018).

Shabaka Hutchings: “You have to get the funding to come here [New York], and then there's getting the proper visa to play, which costs more than we get paid.” – (DownBeat May 2018).

CD Review; Etta James - The Dreamer.

At the age of 73 Etta James has, she says, decided to retire with this, her final studio album.
James has had quite an incredible career with a whole string of accolades - six Grammy awards, two Hall of Fame awards and a Lifetime Achievement gong. One of her Grammy's was a Best Jazz Vocal Performance although there is little of that in evidence here.
Instead, what we get are impeccably performed, dare I use the word "Cover", versions of some Rock/Blues/Pop/Soul classics.
I say "cover" but, of course, with Etta you get an original, perhaps even an alternative, look at them.
Difficult to select stand out tracks but I particularly liked her take on Otis Redding's Cigarettes and Coffee with its rich organ-like harmonies beneath the husky croak of a woman discovering a new love in the early hours. Ray Charles' In The Evening (when the sun goes down) is another emotive track that perhaps sums up the album. Don't play it mid afternoon - play it in the evening with a smoke (if you smoke), a coffee and maybe a double shot to help you sleep.
A worthy goodbye to a great artist who crosses the genres with ease.
The Dreamer by Etta James is released on Nov. 14 by Decca on the Verve label.
Lance.
PS: She can't retire! With a voice like that she must come back!

Submissions for review

Whilst we appreciate the many emails, texts, messages and other communications we receive requesting album/gig reviews on BSH, regrettably, we are unable to reply to them all other than those we are able to answer with a positive response.
Similarly, CDs received by post will only be considered if accompanied by sufficient background material.
Finally, bear in mind that this is a jazz-based site when submitting your album.

Bebop Spoken Here -- Here, being the north-east of England -- centred in the blues heartland of Newcastle and reaching down to the Tees Delta and looking upwards to the Land of the Kilt.
Not a very original title, I know; not even an accurate one as my taste, whilst centred around the music of Bird and Diz, extends in many directions and I listen to everything from King Oliver to Chick Corea and beyond. Not forgetting the Great American Songbook the contents of which has provided the inspiration for much great jazz and quality popular singing for round about a century.
The idea of this blog is for you to share your thoughts and pass on your comments on discs, gigs, jazz - music in general. If you've been to a gig/concert or heard a CD that knocked you sideways please share your views with us. Tell us about your favourites, your memories, your dislikes.
